Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. Committee for At-Risk Scholars and Artists (CASA)

Committee for At-Risk Scholars and Artists (CASA)

CASA coordinates support for scholars and artists who are internally displaced, refugees, asylum seekers, or otherwise at-risk to continue their academic, artistic, and educational pursuits

About Us

CASA is dedicated to supporting scholars and artists who are under threat or in exile from their home institutions and countries.

The committee collaborates with university and community partners to find temporary refuge for the continuation of academic and artistic work.

Guided by the University’s mission to educate for global citizenship, CASA supports academic freedom and the rights of scholars and artists around the world.

We understand that scholars and artists facing persecution for their research, art, or activism come from diverse and complex situations.

The challenges people face stem from various factors that put them and their work at risk, such as:

  • Political oppression
  • Armed conflicts
  • Discrimination
  • Censorship
  • Displacement
  • Other circumstances

CASA supports people who are internally displaced, refugees, asylum seekers, or who have been targeted because of their work in their respective fields, including:

  • Scholars
  • Artists
  • Public intellectuals

CASA facilitates opportunities for the continuation of academic, artistic, and/or educational pursuits.

CASA also builds department and community partnerships to host refugee, asylum seeker, and internally displaced scholars and artists who are seeking safety in a third country.

Avenues for support include:

  • Visiting assistant professors
  • Artists in residency
  • Lecturer positions

We seek to create greater awareness about the importance of academic freedom across the globe and the threats to research, artistic pursuits, and higher education.

CASA also supports university programming on academic freedom and invites collaboration.

CASA acknowledges that the groups we support face limits to their ability to produce and share knowledge and creative work.

We support scholars and artists so they can continue their work and to contribute to global progress and prosperity.

We believe that at-risk scholars and artists make a positive impact on our communities, and that directing university resources to support at-risk scholars and artists aligns with the university’s core values.

Working with Scholars at Risk, Ohio State's Office for International Affairs, and similar partner organizations, CASA will help build department and community partnerships to host refugee, asylum seeker, and internally displaced scholars and artists seeking safety in a third country, including the United States.
